In 2001 Becky Fassino took her first yoga class because her mom was nagging her. The goal was to help with the stresses of her corporate world lifestyle. To this day, Becky remembers what that first class taught her. For the first time in her life, she was aware of how much she unconsciously held her breath. She was a business woman and felt like a competent human being, but when she was asked to move from pose to pose by connecting the breath, she was stumbling. She realized her pattern was to move from one daily task to the next by restricting the breath, not by flowing with the breath.
It was humbling.
And then there was also the fact that her mom was right. Again.
In 2012, Becky and her family relocated from their Baltimore stoop to grow some Lowcountry roots. After diligently researching yoga studio websites online, Becky decided to check out Gaea. From her research, she liked that Gaea seemed to have the least amount of rules and requirements. In person, what she found was that Gaea was open and nurturing in a way that allowed her to practice at her own pace and develop a unique yoga practice that suited her body.
After an exhausting 15-year career as a researcher for pharmaceuticals, it was time for change. This change started with 2 trips out to California for the Ojai Yoga Crib in 2014 & 2015 where Becky was introduced to a much broader expanse of the yoga world. In 2016, Becky took the big leap and enrolled in Gaea Yoga School to complete her 200 hr-RYT in February 2017.
In 2018, Becky decided to take a pause on her corporate career to spend more time with her family, play soccer with her 2 boys, volunteer in the community, and teach yoga. She hopes to pass along the understanding that there is a place for everyone in the yoga world – no matter what reasons the mind may give us. While the shape of our paths or poses may not look the same, we are all welcome to move through this journey together at Gaea.
