Focusing on a foundational arsenal of yin yoga poses, this training will explore how each body is unique (skeletal variation as taught by Paul Grilley) and how different poses can be safely altered or modified to accommodate special target areas as well as the asymmetry of our bodies and our very unique bones. This training will delve into anatomy - both gross and subtle - so that we learn to confidently guide ourselves and our students into the deeper realms. We will thoroughly study which poses reach specific target areas, how rotation of the femur affects the poses, adduction/abduction, what joints are affected by yin yoga and how these joints are affected, as well as meridians, organs, chakras, meditation, and Chinese Medicine theory. We will focus on learning how to cue students to experience stillness in their bodies so that they can face the real challenges of their minds.

As yoga teachers, we must be able to answer the simple questions, 'Why am I doing this pose/stretch/movement?' and 'What is the function of this pose/stretch/movement?'. This training will sufficiently answers these questions.

Kate Smith, Lead Trainer/Soul Diver:
Kate is an E-RYT 500 teacher and has completed over 1000 hours of comprehensive yoga training and over 600 hours of Yin Yoga Teacher Training specifically with foremost yoga anatomist, Paul Grilley. Kate has also been studying with Erich Schiffmann since 2002 and has completed two of his advanced 10-day trainings and numerous weekend trainings with Erich. Kate adds Gil Hedley to her resume, having completed a 3-week intensive human cadaver dissection with Gil in April of 2014. Kate returned to dissect with Gil in June of 2015 - this time with "unfixed" tissues (meaning the corpses had not been embalmed). She also dissected again with Gil in November 2015. In May of 2015, Kate traveled to Greece for an 80-hour Intensive study with Yin Yoga Teacher Sarah Powers. Most recently, Kate traveled to Rishikesh, India in February 2016 to complete the 100-hour FLY & Bhakti Flow Training with Dana Flynn of NYC's Laughing Lotus. In March 2016, Kate attended a 100-hour Bhakti Veda training with the cosmic Saul David Raye. She also attended the meeting of the International Fascia Research Congress in September 2015.
Kate has been studying Chinese Medicine for over 12 years with Gaea Yoga’s resident acupuncturist and herbalist, Sally Robinson, Founder of White Pine Acupuncture in Asheville, NC. Through Kate's daily study of energy medicine, she has developed a keen interest in the healing capabilities of essential oils and has completed two trainings with Peter Holmes of Snow Lotus Aromatherapy.

Legare Smith, Trainer/ Cosmic Relief:
Legare is a Certified Yoga Instructor at the 200-hour Level through Asheville Yoga Center and has been practicing yoga since 2002. In March 2015, he attended a 6-day human cadaver dissection with Gil Hedley in San Francisco, CA. In January 2015, he also completed 100 hours of Yin Yoga and Anatomy Training with Paul & Suzee Grilley in Sayulita, Mexico. He has attended numerous weekend trainings with Erich Schiffmann as well as attending the International Ojai Yoga Crib for 3 consecutive years (2012-2015). He now sees Saul David Raye as his foremost teacher and biggest inspiration. Legare has completed two 100-hour trainings with Saul in February 2014 and March of 2016 and checks in with his teacher as regularly as he can. Legare offers such an interesting perspective to our trainings at Gaea.
We think you'll find Kate and Legare to be a compelling balance as trainers. While Kate is the nerd who craves the depth, Legare helps keep it light and fun.
